Khanya Development Trust - Bulawayo

Khanya Development Trust is a non-governmental organization that offers vocational and business management skills training to the poor and disadvantaged communities in the rural, peri urban and urban communities also to the micro to small and medium scale enterprise sector. It was formed in response to the growing need for small income generating projects and business management skills amongst the poor in the communities. It has been involved in this work since 2003 and to date has trained more than 2,000 entrepreneurs from start ups to those who are starting and already operating in the manufacturing, retail and service industries. The entrepreneurs’ backgrounds have been varied to include - rural and urban, individuals and co-operative groups; the literate and semi-literate.

Training activities in business skills have included the following: Generate Your Business Idea Training, Start Your Business Training, Improve Your Business Training; Competency based Economies through Formation of Enterprises, financial management, marketing, costing and pricing, business planning, numerical skills, stock control, buying and selling, amongst many others. Other skills delivered to groups have included - planning, group dynamics, leadership skills, project management and corporate governance. Entrepreneurs from our programmes have been additionally assisted through follow-up, workshops and seminars, advisory services, marketing, information and referral services to micro-finance institutions. Training activities in various which include: piggery, peanut butter, poultry keeping, market gardening, potato growing and oyster mushroom growing.

The aim of the organisation is to help, assist the poor, disadvantaged, marginalized men, women, youth and children in Zimbabwe with programs that will help alleviate poverty in the communities they live in and to improve their livelihoods. This intervention will help reduce the problem of unemployment in Zimbabwe, reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS (The women, youth and children being the most at risk groups of them contracting HIV /AIDS). Khanya development Trust intends to provide appropriate entrepreneurship development training and vocational skills training, seek to find solutions and means of survival for the above mentioned groups of people. By this we will be strengthening and improving the performance of micro to small and medium-scale entrepreneurs in the informal sector- which is a major area of creation of employment in Zimbabwe, promote and create projects that will encourage the beneficiaries to self sustain themselves both at individual, family and at community level.

KDT also facilitates training for enterprise owners and other trainers, provides consultancy services in its fields of expertise and develops training materials to meet specific client needs.
