• Ensuring compliance with working instructions of batch plant operators, furnace operators and raw material handlers.
• Ensuring compliance to safety standards on all operations.
• Carry out visual check of the furnace conditions for an even blanket or hot spots.
• Physically inspect the batch at the distributor to check correct batch identity, moisture content at the beginning of the shift and note anything of significance in the logbook.
• Looks out for any hot spot on the refractory and makes a written report( if any) in the logbook for furnace maintenance supervisor who takes the appropriate corrective action depending on urgency.
• Emergency coordinating
• Ensures a good housekeeping in all areas of operations.
• Raise a permit to work on critical tasks where necessary.
• Checks the print for quantities added per batch and signs to acknowledge the checks.
• Prepares timesheets for the section.
• ensures adequate staffing on all batch and melting sections
• Reporting shift progression to the batch and melting Manager as well as duty manager

Shift laboratory
• Analysis of Production Samples that include raw materials added in the Furnace, cast iron and mine outputs.
• Coordination and management of the information desk and calls from production managers
• Coordination and management of junior technicians and Sample Preparers
• Shifts reports writing for use by the Chief chemist.
Water Laboratory
• Water Analysis from different plants (cooling water, demineralised water, boiler waters and domestic water)
• Water distillation

Power Station
• Boiler water analysis and recommends dosages.
• Water Sampling from pipes, ponds and other reservoirs
• Controlling the demineralised plant by authorising dosages and carrying out hardness tests.

• Analysis of sewage (industrial and domestic) reclaimed water etc and authorise discharge of water


Coke Ovens Process Control
• Performing spot check on coke ovens gas for CO2, CO, O2 and ammonia GAS. Assess the deficiency of coke ovens by –products lucinerations by performing fixed ammonia test on still effluent on a daily basis. Analyse for specific gravity and distillation on oils, Benzol and tar.
Steel plant laboratory
• Analysis of bath samples and calculates charge for quality treatment using Optic Emission Spectroscopy (OES).
Ladle furnace lab
• Analysis of ladle lollypops, tundish samples using spectro cast. Quality control of steel by analysing iron before and after blown, recommend discharge or casting of steel. Work on molten steel until it reaches customer specifications.
Sampling and sample preparation
• Water sampling: boilers, cooling, river, ponds, dams, demineralised, tap water
• Gas sampling, tar, coal, coke, iron ores and sewage sampling.
Coal and coke laboratory
• Determining ash, phosphorus, sulphur, volatile maters as well as screen size and fixed carbon

• Analysis of settling wastewater and dosages for pH control.
• Analysis of chrome ore for FeO, Cr2O3, SiO2.
• Training departments on Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
• Contacting Proper Job Observations (PJO).
